Requirements

The Independence School District hires substitute teachers, substitute nurses, substitute secretaries, and substitutes for Early Childhood Education throughout the school year.

 

  • Substitute Teachers must have the DESE required amount of college hours from an accredited college or university.

  • Substitute nurses must be currently licensed to practice as a BSN, RN or LPN/LVN in Missouri and have current CPR certification.

  • Substitute Secretaries must have a high school diploma or its equivalency, and secretarial/clerical training and/or experience is   preferred.

  • Substitute Early Childhood workers must have a high school diploma or its equivalency, with training and/or experience in working   with young children preferred.

• Substitute nurses must be currently licensed to practice as a BSN, RN or LPN/LVN in Missouri and have current CPR certification.
• Substitute Secretaries must have a high school diploma or its equivalency, and secretarial/clerical training and/or experience is   preferred.
• Substitute Early Childhood workers must have a high school diploma or its equivalency, with training and/or experience in working   with young children preferred.

Step 1- Complete the online application.

Step 2 - If you do not have a sub certificate, now is the time to apply. Please follow the DESE link above to apply for your Missouri Substitute Certificate or alternate substitute certificate. 

Step 3 - Upon successful review of your application, the Substitute Services Office will contact you with additional information and a date/time for your interview and orientation. Interviews are held at the beginning of the following months: 

September, October, November, February, March, and April. (If you apply in May, June or July those interviews will be held in August)

Step 4 - Fingerprinting, can be done prior to this step however you must use the ISD code in order for your fingerprints to be applied to our district. (click the word fingerprinting for the code list) If you are applying for a Priority Sub position after an interview you will have 72 hours to get your fingerprints completed.

Step 5 - Once cleared background checks (FBI fingerprints, criminal record, child abuse, and neglect) are received from the state, you will be contacted for a mini orientation and an email will be sent to you from our subtitute online service, Aesop/Frontline, to get started. 

 
 

Pay Rates and Pay Dates and the Calendar

Teachers who substitute or substitute teachers who sub intermittently on a day-to-day basis shall be paid at the rate of $130.00 per day, or $65.00 per half day. A half day is defined as teaching three and one-half hours.

Paraeducator Substitute Assignment shall be paid at the rate of $125.00 per day. 

Long Term Substitute Assignments which are 20 or more days, shall be paid at the rate of: 

The workday is the same as that of the classroom teacher. Planning periods that occur at the beginning or end of the day do not permit the substitute's late arrival or early departure. (If you choose to leave early when the planning period is at the end of the day, you will not be paid for those hours.)

Pay days are semi-monthly on the 5th and 20th of each month or the closest banking day. Each pay period is two or three work weeks based on the Pay Period Chart. All employees are required to use direct deposit for their pay distribution. No pay stubs are printed. Employees will receive email notification of their net pay and can check their pay information including sub pay history on My Benefits anytime, in the employee portal. It is your responsibility to update your contact information on the My Benefits website including email address, phone numbers, emergency contacts, and mailing address. Frontline, Absence Management System

Frontline is our absence management system where subs can pick up jobs whether through the district automated calling system, on the website, or the Frontline app. You can also connect to the website through the employee portal under the ISD apps section. 

 

Sub Referral Program

If you or any district employee is interested in obtaining some extra cash, our Sub Referral Program might be the place to start. Refer a friend or loved one about the value and flexability of substitute teaching!!

If they apply and mention you in their interview process, once they sub 4 FULL days in the first 45 days of employment, you will recieve $200!

That's right, your friend or family member can sub for the district and you can receive an additional $200. They just have to mention you during their interview process and sub 4 FULL days in the first 45 days of employement. 

 

New to Subbing:

If you are new to subbing, welcome! Our requirement to continue to sub each year without having to start the process over is to sub 4 full days in the year. It's as simple as one full week since we are a four day school week or perhaps once a quarter. Any way you choose provides the flexibility to stay active and keep subbing!

We also have provided some additional resources to help make your first day the best! Each school site has provided some tips when subbing in their building and you can find that in the school site details link below. We also provide a lending library for substitutes of the Independence School District. Each school is sourced with staff recources but there are also books available for check out at Central Office in the Human Resources Department.  It is located at 201 N. Forest Ave and is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Substitutes of the Independence School district are welcome to check out resource materials for two weeks. And if you are needing a little refresher on technology in the classroom we have a couple of  technology training videos that will help you navigate using a chromebook and getting connected with a projector. 

 

Sub Support Evaluation form: 

The schools will be providing a sub support evaluation form. We want your feedback! After you sub if you would fill out the form and upon check out, turn it into the school secretary, we will be able to continue to grow and shape our sub services to be top notch. We are always looking for ways to benefit our subs and provide the tools you need to have success in this position!
