Welcome to the Adult and Community Education Department
Thank you for your interest in the Independence School District Adult and Community Education programs. We offer a variety of classes including English as a Second Language (ESL), High School Equivelency, and Citizenship classes. Additionally, for your convenience we offer multiple program locations in Kansas City, Independence, and Lee's Summit.
Our program includes three parts:
1. Adult Education and Literacy, including our High School Equivalency (HiSet) preparation classes (formerly known as GED), offers adult students an opportunity to further their education through strengthening reading, mathematics, and language skills. Additionally, adult students can work towards their high school equivalency through our HiSet exam preparation classes. For more information, please click here.
2. English as a Second Language classes for non-native English speakers, including English classes, GED/HiSet classes, and Citizenship classes. We offer free ESL classes to adult immigrants or refugees over the age of 17 years at three convenient locations. If you are interested in our ESL program, please click here.
3. Community Education courses for adult community members will be given the opportunity to gain new skills that make them more marketable in the workforce and expand their knowledge base. We offer interesting and affordable adult classes in a safe environment and our instructors have a genuine desire to share their knowledge with you.
