5th Grade STEM

5th grade students participate in STEM with a program called Project Lead the Way (PLTW).  In this module students explore robotic history and learn more about a particular type of robot. The activities and projects in this module will develop skills and knowledge associated with robotics and the use of VEX® IQ equipment.

The problem for this module is introduced through a fictional story in which the three characters (Angelina, Mylo, and Suzi) are also learning about robotics. The characters learn about the use of robots in the clean up after a natural disaster at a nuclear plant. In this design problem, students will work with a group to design, model, and test a robot that can remove hazardous materials from a disaster site. They will also design the layout of the site to include a water site and a hazardous materials collection zone.

Battle bots!

Students are sharing their robots with other students.

Robots! The students all built a basic body for a robot and then they modified it to complete the task of moving 3 blocks across an arena in under 2 minutes.  Several added claws with another motor.  They operate either by remote control, or by coding.

Students created a Scribble-bot by connecting a motor and wires to a battery.

Researching Robots: The students in the following phots are researching various robots using an iPad application called Robots. After they researched robots, they presented information to the class with another app called Lensoo.

Creating Toys: Students worked collaboratively using engineering skills to design, sketch, and build a model of a toy using VEX IQ components. Students use previous knowledge and experience with different kinds of toys to design a toy that has at least one moving part.

Students love playing with robots including Sphero, BB8, Ollie, Evo, Dash and Dot.  They use their iPads to program the robots.
