Welcome to Independence School District Community Education!  We offer a variety of classes to the communities of Independence and other surrounding areas. You must be 18 years or older in order to enroll and participate in any of our community education courses.

Learn to do every step of the quilting process on a table topper (table runner in a square).  We'll learn rotary cutting, piecing, pressing, quilt sandwiching, free motion quilting, embroidery applique, and binding. *A little bit of sewing experience is required.

Are you or a loved one turning 65 or becoming eligible for Medicare due to disability? This is a fun, relaxed class and a pain-free way to learn.  What is Medicare Part A & Part B? About 174 million workers are paying into Social Security in 2018.  How do you qualify for retirement benefits and when is the best age to start receiving Social Security retirement benefits?  What are benefits for spouses, divorced spouses, and survivor benefits?  Can you work and get Social Security? If you postpone Social Security how do you start Medicare? Where do I find my retirement estimator? This will be a relaxed class that will make the fundamentals of Social Security as easy as 1,2,3.

Do you want to make an impression at your next dinner party? Chef Myron Powell will help take your cooking skills to the next level. Combining detailed instruction with hands-on practice this class will guide you to culinary enlightenment. This four-part class series is recommened to be taken as a whole, but you can take individual classes. A cut above the rest; Chef Myron's culinary skills have helped strengthen businesses while working with the Independence Economic Development Council. Chef has been teaching for four years and also assists the Independence School District Innovation Center Culinary School.

  • Session 1--Wednesday, March 5-Essentials for Practical Cooking: Menu, compostion, balance, & knife demonstrations
  • Session 2--Wednesday, March 19-Principles of Soup: Hot sauce, cold sauce production, fundamental applications

Have you ever been told that you have a great voice? This exciting class will explore numerous aspects of voice over work for television, film, radio, audio books, documentaries and the internet in your area. We will cover all the basics including how to prepare the all important demo, how to be successful and earn great income in this exciting field. Students will have the opportuity to ask questions and hear examples of demos recorded by professional voice actors. Class participants will even have a chance to record a commercial script under the direction of our producer.

This introductory class encompasses the very basics of meditation. You will leave class with the knowledge of how to practice meditation. Don Limoncelli has been a student and practitioner of mediation for more than twenty years. Join us in class to learn more.

Transforming into a completely different class than in the past, Certified WaterART Aquatic Mind-Body Instructor will now blend the mindful movements of Tai Chi, Pilates, and Yoga into a water fitness class, unique to any in the area! Energy flow, mental focus, balance and relaxation will be emphasized, while using the water's resistive and buoyant properties to aid in the controlled exercise. *Class size limited to approximately 9.  Registration is not required, however participation will be first come/first serve up to class limit size.

Did you know that you can eat healthier and much cheaper by making your food from scratch? Taught by an ISD teacher and mother of six children who has had a lot of practice at cooking, this class will instruct participants on how to: read a recipe, make the base for stews, soups, and sauces, grate/chop/dice/slice, and saute.  Healthy ingredient substitutions will also be discussed/used for some recipes.  Enjoy the results of you new cooking expertise at the end of each class. Please bring a container to take home leftover. Sign up for one session or both.

This class is taught by Daniel Rowland, born and raised in Kansas City, MO. He has over 30 years experience in doing Airbrushing. This class will cover surface preparation, airbrush maintenance, using and cutting stencils, control techniques, highlighting, shadowing, painting and much more. After learning the basic control techniques, students will move on to starting and creating a finished airbrushed painting either on a tee shirt or on a canvas.
