Community Member of Character for Second Quarter

Cargo Largo

For years the Independence store known for deep discounts helps Independence School district families. The Cargo for Kids program raises money and collects supplies for “success packs” that are delivered to homeless children.  The program provides hundreds of backpacks each year. The company also helps Independence School District students through the program called Holiday Helpers.

Parents involved in the program volunteer in schools and the community and earn holiday helper cards. They can use those cards to buy holiday gifts for their families. Cargo Largo provides even more discounts for the families when they use those card and they encourage shoppers to give to the program.

The Missouri Mavericks and the Sheet Metal Workers

The Missouri Mavericks reserve four seats for an Independence School District Student of Character and his or her family.

All students of character get their names in a drawing and for each home game, one name is chosen to get the special seats.

When the Mavericks first came to Independence, they wanted to know how they could partner with the district to help students.  They jumped on the idea of spotlighting students of character. The Sheet Metal Workers sponsor the program and make it all possible.  The students also receive a t-shirt to commemorate the occasion and they are recognized at the game. The child's name is called out in front of the whole crowd.
