Book Buddies
Mrs. Heath and my class meet on Mondays for Book Buddies. 5th graders are reading role models for younger students. They take turns reading back and forth. Our 5th grade class reviews a focus skill prior to meeting to practice with the younger students. Focus skills include inferencing, making personal connections to characters, identifying genres, finding supporting details, etc. Culture Fridays
Mrs. Tucker is my teaching partner and we are featuring a new culture for each Friday Activity. Last week we learned about Italy…architecture, customs, and daily life for kids their age in Italy. Students made paper dolls like Italian children do and we made and ate tiramisu. They liked it and wanted more! We used decaf coffee and sugar free pudding to keep it kid friendly and healthy. This week students on Silver or Gold Levels will learn about China and make their own fortune cookies with Mrs. Tucker. WHAT WE ARE LEARNING

The Jackson County Parks & Recreation Historic Sites have partnered with the Independence School District Elementary Social Studies Design Team to develop a study trip to Fort Osage in Sibley, MO, where students will investigate the causes and consequences of Westward Expansion and early settlement of America.
