American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Prerequisites

To pass the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course students must meet the following requirements:

  • Able to swim 300 yards consecutively
    • 100 yards front crawl
    • 100 yards breast stroke
    • 100 yards choice between front crawl or breast stroke
  • Perform the diving brick test within 1 minute 40 seconds
    • Swim 20 yards
    • Surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet
    • Retrieve the 10 lbs diving brick and swim back to the starting point
    • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps
  • Pass all rescue skill scenarios.
  • Pass all CPR skill scenarios.
  • Pass the written exam with a score of 80% or better.
