8109: Foundations of Wood Technology (1 credit, Gr. 9-12)
This fundamental course stresses the development of tools, machine safety, and skills. Students will gain knowledge in the safe use of hand and power tools, machines, career exploration, project planning, problem-solving, and applied math and science. Students will have an understanding for the awareness of industry employment expectations, job outlooks, and educational requirements. This is a project-oriented course in wood working where students will be assigned to construct medium sized project. Required: Safety glasses and 3- ring binder.
8118: Advanced Woods (2 credits/2 periods, Gr. 10-12)
Prerequisite: Passing grade in both semesters of Foundations of Wood (8109)
Advanced Woods is a course that will reinforce students’ skills and knowledge related to carpentry and cabinetmaking. Topics covered include equipment and machine care and safe usage, materials; fasteners; hand and power tools; fabrication based on blueprints. This course gives students additional skills and knowledge typically required for apprentice carpenters.
8250: Construction Trades I (3 credits/3 periods, Gr. 11)
Prerequisite: Passing grade in both semesters of Advanced Woods (8118)
Trade 1 is a course in which students will extend their skills and knowledge related to residential and commercial carpentry. Topics covered include installation and trim of windows and doors, installation and repair of gypsum wallboard, advanced site layout, exterior and interior finish work, and thermal and moisture protection. This course gives students a substantial skill and knowledge foundation typically required for apprentice carpenters.
8252: Construction Trades II (3 credits/3 periods, Gr. 12)
Prerequisite: Passing grade in both semesters of Construction Trades I (8250)
Trade 2 is a course in which students will refine their skills and knowledge related to residential and commercial carpentry. ELECTIVE COURSES IN PATHWAY
8123: Home Maintenance (0.5 credit, Gr. 10-12)
Classroom and shop experiences will be concerned with the installation, maintenance, and re- pair of buildings. Instruction includes experiences in the use of assorted materials, such as metal, wood, electrical wiring, and concrete. Career objectives are identified with a variety of occupational groups and specialization such as: electricity, plumbing, roofing, construction, maintenance trades, and repairing equipment. Required: Safety glasses. Recommended: Accident insurance.
8111: Intermediate Woods (1 credit, Gr. 10-12)
Prerequisite: Passing grade in both semesters of Foundations of Wood (8109)
This is an advanced project-oriented course in wood working. This class is designed around materials, processes, designing, finishes, and hard- ware used in the wood manufacturing industries. Instruction continues in machine safety, wood- working tool, and machine maintenance. Special emphasis is placed on setting up and operating machines and tools that are introduced as a part of this course reflecting industry standards. Students will apply previously learned skills to new lessons that this course builds upon from the previous woodworking experiences provided in Foundations of Wood Technology. Required: Safety glasses and 3-ring binder.
