1107/1108: Core Support for English Language Arts (1 credit, Gr. 9/10)
- Reading closely and analytically to comprehend a range of increasingly complex literary and informational text.
- Producing effective and well-grounded writing for a range of purposes and audiences.
- Employing effective speaking and listening skills for a range of purposes and audiences.
- Engaging in research/ inquiry to investigate topics and to analyze, integrate, and present information.
9th Grade
1101: English I (1 credit, Gr. 9)
This ISD-Missouri Learning Standards based curriculum focuses on skills and concepts of 9th grade ELA coursework. Students who meet ELA grade level standards readily undertake the close attentive reading that is at the heart of understanding and enjoying complex texts. They habitually perform the critical reading necessary to pick carefully through the staggering amount of information available today in print and digitally. They actively seek the wide, deep, and thoughtful engagement with high-quality literary and informational texts that builds knowledge, enlarges experience, and broadens worldviews. In short, students who meet the standards of this ISD HS ELA course develop the skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening that are the foundation for any creative and purposeful expression in language.
10th Grade
1104: English II Honors (1 credit, Gr. 10 weighted)
This advanced level course for highly motivated students is designed to prepare students for rigorous literacy demands both in and out of school. The increasingly complex skills and knowledge captured in this course include critical-thinking skills and the ability to closely and attentively read and compose texts in a way that will help students understand and enjoy a wide variety of advanced level literary experiences. Students will develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in preparation for Advanced Placement/college credit ELA coursework and beyond.
1105: English II (1 credit, Gr. 10)

1155: AP English Language and Composition (1 credit, Gr. 11, weighted) College Credit Available
This course engages students in becoming skilled readers of prose written in a variety of rhetorical contexts, and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Both their writing and their reading will make students aware of the interactions among a writer’s purposes, audience expectations, and subjects, as well as the way genre conventions and the resources of language contribute to effectiveness in writing. Students may select both AP and dual credit enrollment for this course.
1140: Composition & Reading I (MCC ENG 101) (1/2 credit, Gr. 11/12, weighted) College Credit Available
Serves as prerequisite for 102 and/or 200 level MCC ENG courses.
This course focuses on composing process that includes exploration of ideas through reading, methods of writing development, and use of writing conventions. Instruction takes students from reflective expression to critical analysis through writing.
1141: Composition & Reading II (MCC ENG 102) (1/2 credit, Gr. 11/12, weighted) College Credit Available
Prerequisite: Completion of MCC ENG 101.
In this course, students are asked to analyze and evaluate persuasive essays for the writer’s use of logical thinking. Students will develop research skills for the purpose of creating documented essays that reflect critical thinking and logical argument.
1131: English III (1 credit, Gr. 11)

1143: Introduction to Fiction (MCC ENG 214) (0.5 credit, Gr. 12, weighted) College Credit Available
Prerequisite: Successful completion of and 100 level ENG Course through MCC.
This course includes reading, discussion, and analysis of short stories and novels, along with nterpretation, evaluation, and enjoyment of works within both literary forms.
1182: World Masterpieces (MCC ENGL 256) (0.5 credit, Gr. 12, weighted) College Credit Available
Prerequisite: Successful completion of and 100 level ENG Course through MCC.
In this course, students study world masterpieces of prose, drama, and poetry as embodiments of views of the human condition.
1117: Creative Writing (MCC ENG 201) (0.5 credit, Gr. 12, weighted) College Credit Available
Prerequisite: Successful completion of and 100 level ENG Course through MCC.
Students in this course will compose various types of imaginative writing such as fiction, poetry, plays/scripts, and creative non-fiction.
12th Grade
1157: AP English Literature and Composition (1 credit, Gr. 12, weighted)
his course engages students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close reading of selected texts, students deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. As they read, students consider a work’s structure, style and themes, as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism and tone. Students may select both AP and dual credit enrollment for this course.
1180: Communication in the Workplace (1 credit, Gr. 12)
This course teaches reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills required of business professionals throughout organizations. Students gain an understanding of the fundamentals of communication and are taught how to master the techniques and practices that are hallmarks of powerful and effective workplace communication.
